special plastics for engraving have been developed for signage, faceplates, and other items.

standard cast and sheet acrylic plastic and other resins can be laser engraved. commonly engraved awards use a cast acrylic shape lasered from the back. styrene, the plastic used to make compact disk cases, and many thermoform plastics, will soften around the edges of the engraving, resulting in low contrast. the surface may even ripple or become deformed. in some applications, such as date marking on plastic soda bottles, this is acceptable.

grey scale

common cnc engraver can t engrave spots with different shapes and sizes, so there is no grey scale. laser engraver has this function, so they have natural advantage in grey scale. people make use of this performance to save cost in pigmentation and increase layers of different graphics to enrich the presentation. when using the laser machine, users fill the graphics with different grey scale first (characters should be transformed to be graphics), then choose black and white mode for output of engraving, they can test the effect of different network. precision is less than 500dpi.

Vector and Raster Modes in Laser Engraving

in raster engraving, the laser traces a slowly advancing pattern across the surface in a back-and-forth motion like an inkjet printer.

in vector engraving, the line and curve of the pattern to be engraved are followed much like a pen-based plotter draws lines from a pattern outline. early engraving, laser and traditional, of signs and plaques often used prestored font outlines to scale and reproduce letters, numbers, and even logos to size with precise strokes. unfortunately, due to a lack of precision in calculating spacing s, fill areas, as cross-hatching patterns and dot-fills, sometimes showed moir?? effects or uber-patterns. moreover, the font device was not capable of rotations or dynamic scaling. today the postscript software language allows much greater flexibility. just about anything that can be described in vectors by software using postscript, such as corel draw or adobe illustrator, can be outlined, filled in with appropriate patterns, and laser engraved.

the following three applications other than engraving are perfect for the high powered laser.

cutting

high-power lasers can be used not only to engrave, but to cut material. this is done at power levels that allow the laser beam to go all the way through the piece rather than just hit the surface. the same basic techniques are used in the fabrication of cut shapes in wood or stacked fabric in the manufacture of clothes and even metals (plasma cutting). the removal of toxic gases is often provided by a forced-air snout aimed directly at the laser-cutting area.
