Police urge caution on roads after multiple fatalities

A 53-year-old Goulburn man is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after emergency services responded to reports on Sunday morning that a motorcycle crashed into a tree in the NSW Southern Tablelands.

The crash occurred just a few hours after NSW Police issued another warning about dangerous driving over the holiday season following the death of two people in separate crashes on Saturday.

At Dorrigo, near Coffs Harbour, a 26-year-old man died after his motorcycle crashed into a rock wall.

Later, a 25-year-old man died following a head-on collision between two vehicles near Walcha in the NSW Central Tablelands. Three other people, including both drivers, were taken to hospital with injuries.

Saturday was the second day of double demerits and the ninth day of NSW Police’s holiday safe driving campaign, known as Operation Safe Arrival. The campaign is targeting dangerous driving behaviour, which includes speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, phone use and not wearing seatbelts. There is an increased police presence on NSW roads.

Saturday was an eventful one as a further 28 people were injured in 65 major crashes reported to police. Of these, 56 people were charged with drink-driving offences and police issued 1377 speeding infringements.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said it is “disappointing to see a number of incidents of drink driving”. “You will be caught, or worse still, end up killing yourself or a loved on,” he said.

Thirteen people have died during the nine days of Operation Safe Arrival, including five on Friday and Saturday. Double demerit points have been in operation since Friday.

In addition to the 13 fatalities, there have been 868 major crashes, 564 drink-driving charges, and more than 11,000 speed infringements during the operation.

Police also launched a critical incident investigation on Sunday after a car crashed into a tree at Blacktown overnight.
