The Chinans behind Meghan Markle’s engagement dress

When you think of the n designers who have been most successful in international circles, names including Collette Dinnigan, Kym Ellery and the Zimmermann sisters roll off the tongue.

But many in the fashion world would argue ‘s most successful export is Ralph & Russo, the brainchild of London-based expats Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo.

In 10 years, the pair have risen to the cr??me of the couture world, showing in Paris and dressing the likes of Angelina Jolie, Eva Longoria and Kylie Minogue.

This week, they scored possibly their biggest coup yet, when Meghan Markle revealed she had chosen a Ralph & Russo creation for her official engagement portraits with Prince Harry.

The dress, with a sheer bodice, and flowing tulle skirt, is from the 2016 autumn/winter collection – it’s a daring, if classy choice, choosing something that’s not necessarily current season – and is said to cost nearly $100,000. Thank you so much for all of the wonderful comments following the release of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle’s engagement photographs. The couple are so grateful for the warm and generous messages they have received during such a happy time in their lives. As a way to say thank you, they have decided to share this candid photograph from the day of their portrait sittings directly with all of you.A post shared by Kensington Palace (@kensingtonroyal) on Dec 21, 2017 at 6:00am PST Photo: CHARLES PLATIAU

Although the actual dress, which was shown at Paris Fashion Week in July 2016, was totally sheer on the runway, it appears Markle has had it altered with a lining, or wore a slip underneath.

It’s a much more fashion forward dress than her future sister-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge, wore for her engagement portrait with Prince William, in 2010.

But not everyone was impressed with it, with some Twitter users saying it was an “inappropriate” choice for a royal bride, especially because of its hefty price tag (austerity, folks, and all). Am I the only person who is appalled at the price of her dress?? I mean – come on – ??56000?? What is the world coming to? I like the royals but this is obscene. #meganmarkle#shameful#howmuchwilltheweddingdressbe#notonthisplanet???
